Different Psychological Needs For Women Of Color In The Adult Industry?
First off I must submit my credentials for the psychological analytical statements that I am about to make. I once dated a young lady that graduated from Xavier University first in her class with a psychology major. Plus I kept a subscription to Psychology Today, for over ten years. In other words I don’t have academic credentials to back the statements that I am about to make. They are only opinions surmised through observation.
I must first answer the question I asked. The answer in my mind is yes the needs are much different for women of color in the adult industry than their white counter parts. The African-American, Asian American and Latino-American communities are very conservative when it comes to sex. When a woman from one of these communities enter the adult industry she stands a very good chance for losing family, friends and any meaningful relationship with someone from of her community. I am not saying that this doesn’t happen to a white woman in the adult industry but women of color are hit with this and slapped in the face as soon as they enter the industry. They are told that their value isn’t as high as their white counter part because there is a paid differential between women of color and white adult stars. White stars get more money and because your skin isn’t white you are valued you less. That’s a hell of a thing to be facing as you enter an industry.
Relationships are another disappointment. Men from these communities are indifferent at best and debasing at the worst. I read once that this from the guy in the industry said that the public jerked off with their left hand and pushed away adult stars with their right hand. When I saw that I thought that it was so right. There’s love/hate relationship with adult stars. In these more conservative communities the men are exactly like this. Of course, most would love to take you to bed but home to mother is something totally unacceptable. What I have seen is that a lot of women of color in the adult industry date and married white males. Most of the time these relationship last about as long as a snowball in hell. I have even heard some black women in porn say that they don’t date black men. This is a defense mechanism I feel. After being rejected over and over by black men I think they feel they should just stop the bleeding by not dealing with black men. That’s sad and hurtful for them I am sure.
With just these two examples it’s a wonder how women of color make it out of the blocks. Under all this negative pressure I can’t think of one woman of color that has taken her own life, like a Shauna Grant or Savannah. Again I not saying that white women in the adult industry don’t fall under the same pressures but I think the pressure is multiplied for women of color because of the conservative communities from which they come from. I think every female in the adult industry should have a psychologist to maintain a healthy mental state. Maybe women of color should have two.
