Is The Adult Industry Ready To Move Into The 21st Century?

Hell, I sure hope so but it going to be pulled into it kicking and screaming. The change is going to have to come from new blood being brought into the industry. Waiting for the old guard to die out will take too long. Plus they are passing that same old mentality to those that they are going to pass the torch to. The old way of thinking was to tell women of color that they didn’t sell. But women like Ebony Ayes and Jeannie Pepper were undeniable and they proved that to be a lie. Today’s pornographers still use the market to justify racist thinking. It’s not the market because I think the market would tell you something totally different.

Let me move into the mainstream for a minute. Madison Avenue has never been known to have a spine. They have only made moves socially once demographics said they could. In the 90’s the black female was in vogue to use to push products. Black beauty was being trumpeted and what did black females do? They decided to try to look more European but I will come back to that later. In the late 90’s I started seeing more interracial couples (white male/black female) in advertisements. Today I see more and more black male/white female coming from Madison Avenue for advertisements. Obviously, spineless Madison Avenue thinks society has evolved so isn’t time for the adult industry to evolve. Do we wait for a Darwin type evolution or go the way of Dr.Arik Soong’s “Augments”? (Trekkies know whom I am talking about).

For this process of change to be successful we are going to have to break it down to it least common denominator. What’s very important to all of this is marketing. You have to let the public know who, what, and where you are. In today’s world it’s so easy to do with the Internet. Also people of color must own and control media that help expose talent. Right now women of color are an after thought in the adult industry media. The adult industry media like most media is very influential. They can make you or break or do what they do for women of color they can just ignore you. But the Internet is the equalizer. With blogs, yahoo clubs, my space sites self promotion can be done with ease. Talent must understand basic marketing and understand how to use the media. Do interviews and make yourself available for the media and learn how to use them to your advantage.

Now for the next part of this change is production quality. In the 90’s so many black films to shot down because of the poor production quality. No sets or locations maybe a sofa not even a bed. I remember seeing this same sofa in over 10 or 15 films by this one producer. Lighting was poor along with sound. If you are going to be a producer learn your art and take pride in your work. Today with digital equipment production quality doesn’t have to be poor. It’s something that can be easily handled.

The major key to these changes is the woman of color in the adult industry, especially black women. Remember when I said black beauty was ready to be trumpeted? Well right then black women decided they needed to look more European and the explosion of the weave started. But this is much deeper than women just in the adult industry. This something the black community has deal with. The self-hatred of our hair has grown so that people don’t even know they are doing it let alone admit to it. Now I understand I am starting a fight but bring it on. I can hear it now, “this is just my style”. Your style is short and kinky. I don’t understand why you feel that is so unattractive. White producers understand you don’t like yourself and they use that against you. Put you in the most degrading position you can be in. It’s my believe that most of the individuals producing porn don’t like women for whatever reason and to find a woman that don’t like herself is just a dream. This doesn’t have to be. Be yourself and stop trying to be someone else.

Another hit black women get in the adult industry is that a lot of them aren’t fit. Its three things I feel black women should do once they decide to go into the adult industry. One; set goals and decide what you want to accomplish in the business. Two; decide at the same time how long you are going to be in the business. Three; join a gym. Hate to sound cold about it but you must realize that your body is your chief economic product. Meaning that you appearance is everything to you and you must be fit. I understand too that black women hold weight a little differently than your average white female. Now if you are 5’4”, 160 lbs, at 25 years of age you can carry that well. But remember you are just one buttermilk biscuit away from being fat and you eat buttermilk biscuits everyday. I’m not going to tell you to stop eating but you need to work out a little harder everyday. To me it just boils down to having pride in your appearance.

If the industry negative attitude toward women of color is to change then all people of color that are interested in making this change, ships must all sail in the same direction. This means talent, producers, and consumer must demand excellence from each other. The talent is going to have to be on her game and not let herself be placed in degrading positions. Producers are going to need to learn their art take pride in their work. Consumers are going to have to demand better projects with women of color in them. The consumer must not to buy material they think is degrading to women of color. Then and only when will we see a change for the better.
