Can Women Of Color Be
Successful In The Adult Industry
Without Substantial
Support From White Adult Fans
In one resounding word, no. And why? It’s pure and simple it’s the numbers. There are more white porn fans than people of color that enjoy porn. So it’s very important to have what is called crossover appeal. In other words you have to have the look that producers think will sell. Most of the time that means that she has to be pencil thin. For Asian women that maybe workable but for African and Latino women they hold there weight a bit differently than the rest. As far as the best bodies in porn as it relate to women of color the women of 80s had the best bodies. Women like Ebony Ayes, Jeannie Pepper, Angel Kelly, Nina DePonca, and Purple Passion had the perfect bodies to be the fantasies girls of the porn. Today all I hear is “thick”. But I guess if growing up you ate 3 or 4 times a week at McDonalds then you can’t help but be “thick”. Now I think the word “thick” is being over used when the word “fat” would suffice. I prefer the word tone when I am talking about African or Latino women. The women of the 80s were just that, tone and fit and they had that crossover appeal. What I would like to do now is go back and look at the women of color in porn of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s. Each era had different things that they had to go through but they all faced similar difficulties too.
Women of color in the adult industry during the 1970’s were unique because they were the first. African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians all come from conservative communities where this type of profession is frowned upon. It was also during the time when mainstreams Hollywood imagery of people of color, especially black people were for the most part negative. The adult industry followed suit and produced stereotypical roles for women of color. Even with all of the strife that was involved with being in the industry these women were able to be a success. Remember, Vanessa Del Rio became a porn icon.
The women of color in the adult industry from the 1980’s were unique because of the times. The adult industry was in a boom because of the VCR. Once VCR’s hit the market you didn’t have to go to some adult theatre to watch porn you could do it out the privacy of your home. So the market for porn became larger and the women in the adult industry became better known. Women of color like Ebony Ayes and Jeannie Pepper developed a solid fan base during that time. They became the first women of color that were undeniable. Up until this point women of color were being told that they didn’t sell so they couldn’t get the box cover or carry a film as the star. Up until this point club owners didn’t think women of color would bring in a crowd so they weren’t invited to be featured dancers. During this time women like Ebony and Jeannie proved that if giving a fair chance they could bring in revenue just as good as anyone.
For the women of color of the 1990’s the scene had become totally different. There were many more women willing to enter the industry. Again technology had an affect on the adult industry. In the 90’s digital cameras and editing software came on the scene. That meant that anyone with a camera and computer could become an adult producer and many did. The adult industry became even more of a sausage factory and the production quality of many projects were poor. Producers were pulling black women off the street with no make-up and because they didn’t have camera or lighting technique made many look bad. Some women that could have made an impact were cut off at the knees by appearing in so many of this type film. The 90’s especially the late 90’s was a bad time for women of color in the adult industry.
Now the women of color in the 2000’s are 00s. And we all know that 00s are licensed to kill. But will we have one to step out and be the only agent that can defeat SPECTRE? I don’t know, the decade is half over and I can’t think of one woman of color that has stepped out above the crowd as of now. Question for the fans; are there any women of color that you would leave work early to go see at a video or bookstore signing? Because the market is saturated with porn, there no creativity coming from producers, and there is a race to the bottom because of this shock valve that producers are involved in it’s going to be very difficult for someone to stand above the crowd. I am not saying that it’s impossible but it going to be hard.
Desiree West- (time in the business and retired or at least when last film was released) 1973-1987; 82 titles
Desiree was an attractive black woman that started her film career in 1973. I think she was one of the first black women to get any notoriety from doing adult films. Maybe I shouldn’t say notoriety but lets just say she was able to make a career out of it. She was paired with John Holmes a few times. I remember seeing her for the first time in “Sex World”. It was a take off of this western-sci-fi film West World. I saw it on the Playboy Channel in the late 70s. I am sure Desiree had many challenges during her time. She never had a box cover or carried a film as a lead character. And it was during the time of the blaxploitation era in Hollywood. Black actors and actresses were pigeon holed into playing hustlers, pimps or ho’s. So what do you think she was going through in the porn world?
Vanessa Del Rio-1974-1999, 183 titles
Vanessa Del Rio, what can I say? Vanessa pulled off something that I am sure many during her time were trying to figure out. How did this Latino woman become a porn icon? Even if you didn’t view porn you had knew about Vanessa Del Rio. She did it all, like DPs long before it was something more common. 4 or 5 guys would bath her in cum and anal was never a problem. The Vanessa Del Rio persona was pure sexual energy and that was how she was able to beat the odds. Vanessa Del Rio had to be the original “undeniable” porn star. Once the fans got a load of this lady they were done. She had that star quality and made thousands outside of her film projects doing appearances and featured dancing. Vanessa was also one of the first adult stars of her era to use that Internet to stay in touch with her fans.
Mai Lin-1976-1999, 157 titles
Mai Lin was one of the first Asian females to make a name in adult films. Of course she did a lot of the stereotypical role. But the fire was there and she became a main stay in a few films from 1976 to 1999. Mai Lin understood that at anytime she could take over a scene and in many of her scenes she did.
Ebony Ayes-1986-1989, 155 titles
Ebony Ayes was the first porn star that I was a fan of. She had the prefect body and sexual energy that no one could beat while she was in the mix. Ebony came along during the porn’s biggest expansion in the market. She had a fan base so solid that producers or club owners couldn’t deny her but of course she was told that black women didn’t sell. But her fan base wouldn’t have it. She was always one to take control of a scene and I cannot think of one time when she gave a disappointing performance.
Jeannie Pepper-1984-present, 206 titles
Jeannie Pepper is one that you could tell was having fun in every film she was in. She had a models body with the long legs and busty chest line. Even today closing in on 50, Jeannie body can beat some women in porn today in their early 20’s. She was always ready with a quick line and was ready to take on all comers. Jeannie is a real renaissance lady. She has with easy been able to reinvent herself for two decades so that fans and producers wanted to continue seeing her. 20 years plus in this industry is unheard of.
Angel Kelly-1985-1991, 179 titles
Angel Kelly was one of those petite, tone and sexy women of the 80’s. Full of sexual energy, Angel brought it all to bear as she zeroed in on her partner. In most of her scene she was able to take things to the next level as for as heat. Once Angel Kelly was turned on it wasn’t an easy job to turn her off. She was able to do well on the dance circuit and had the devotion of fans.
Domonique Simone-1990-2004, 289 titles
Domonique Simone was the it girl of the 90s. She was being positioned to be the next black adult star. Domonique was doing plenty of films, magazine layouts, television appearances, and even part of a Hollywood scandal being a party buddy of Charlie Sheen. It was being all laid out for her then Domonique fell victim of her own demons. She dropped out of sight around 1999 then came back to the industry in late 2003 for about a year now she’s retired again.
Heather Hunter-1988-2004, 68 titles
Heather Hunter was a very unique case. She was a very petite women but full of energy. Heather didn’t do 70 films where as Domonique Simone did close to 300 films. Heather was a vivid girl for a long time and parlayed her adult film career to her dreams, a recording contract. Heather became very popular outside the adult industry also. She came so close to being that porn icon.
Asia Carrera-1993-2005, 369 titles
At one time the world was Asia Carrera oyster. This Asian beauty was in a lot of high budget films during the 90’s. Always ready to leave it all on film, Asia’s performance was eagerly awaited. She was a Vivid girl and was one of the first of her era to have her own website that she designed. She had cosmetic surgery to make her eyes less Asian looking. When I read that the first thing I said was; I was glad to see that black women weren’t the only one to be hood wink.

How Women Of Color Should Navigate In The Adult Industry
Anyone that has read my writings about the adult industry understands that I have no respect for the powers to be of the industry. For the most part I think that they are a group of undereducated, racist at their core, unaccomplished white males. How else can you explain why there treatment of people of color in the adult industry today is basically unchanged in the past 25 years? I also feel that at the core they truly dislike women. They always want to say that it’s just fantasy but I ask why would your fantasies be so dark towards women if you had any respect for them. So I shake my uru hammer (the Mighty Thor’s hammer) at that sorry lot.
This week I have been communicating with this young lady that was in the industry that knew quite of few black female in the industry. This lady is out of the industry now and has been for almost two years. But after communicating with her I immediately found out she was funny as hell and had a very insightful take on the black women in the industry. Let me start off be telling you exactly what she said:
I am a FIRM believer that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Even if you provide an avenue for these new up and coming black starlets to shine in this industry...if it's not in them to be winners, they will ultimately find a way to fuck it up..maybe thats a bit pessimistic, but even if you lead them to the water, instead of taking a sip..they might fall in and drown!
After I read this I laughed for 20 minutes. Basically she feels that it’s on each individual to be successful. How you handle yourself in the industry as far as money, attitude, and self-worth plays a big part of any success you may have. Now I totally agree with that but I also understand that the industry has structural problems and that hamper ones success if your are a black actress. I often wonder about women, especially black women that freely walk into the adult industry. You stand the chance of your family and friends turning their backs on you, finding a serious lasting relationship is now cut in half, and what you have done in your youth may come back to hunt and/or to hurt you at a time when you may have changed your lifestyle totally around. But I say, once you are in and you know these things why not be the best you can be. So it’s like why do you have to put up with a group of unaccomplished white males standing in your way. That’s madness and it needs to stop.
What does it take for a woman of color to be successful in the adult industry? Marketing, marketing, marketing, marketing. If she doesn’t understand that she’s in a hole from the very start. I’m not saying that she has to be a marketing genius but simple marketing principles shouldn’t be so hard to understand. The more you are seen, the more you are featured in articles in print and the more your photos are seen, the more people know about you. How can industry photographers and fans not recognize a woman that has been in the business for 3 years now and have been in over a 120 films at an industry event? It sounds crazy but this just happened to Marie Luv because I read it on her blog on her MySpace site. I think she was a little taken a back because of it. How can this be possible? Today the industry is full of women that do porn. The adult industry has long stopped trying to promote women into stars. When you have a star in the business that star can demand a salary but when you just have women that are in porn they have to accept what a producer wants to pay. The industry doesn’t want white porn stars so you know they don’t want black porn stars at all. You do have white porn stars that are very successful but they only last two or three years and that’s by design. Jenna Jamison is a totally different animal. Unless this individual is willing to get out there and work on promotions and marketing, once the industry has pulled everything they can pull out of her she’s going to drop off the face of the earth. At least a white adult star has a base to start from once she’s on her on but that woman of color is just out there. Today you can’t name one black adult star that would have a base to start from. There hasn’t been anyone the industry has promoted enough to the public. And if a starlet waits on that she will be waiting for a very long time.
There is an avenue to take that will help women of color be successful in the adult industry. In the past the key to success as an adult actress relates to how much money you could make outside the film industry. The dance circuit was the key and how many appearances you could make, i.e. adult video and bookstores. Today the avenue is the Internet. Through hard work a women of color can cultivate a very strong fan base via the Internet. If you are in the industry there is no reason for you not to have a website, yahoo club, and now a MySpace site. This industry is going to take all it can from you so why not get every cent you can from it. But you have to have a plan and be astute enough to work the industry while it’s working you. You must learn to be an opportunist. The retired adult star that give me her insight about the industry told me that she was damn near on the streets when she got in the industry. But she had a plan and for the most part stuck to it. She was able to get her credit together, save some money and buy a house. Buying a house is something I know women that have been in the industry for years haven’t done. She felt that a lot of them just blow their money and are living from day to day.
In this industry like in the general population you only have a few individuals with good business sense. If you think having a nice car and apartment is success then it doesn’t take much to please you and you are prefect for this industry. But your bar of success is much higher then you are going to be labeled as a pain in the ass to work with. You refuse to do certain acts or want more money than the average women in porn then you are going to find this industry difficult. If you stand up for yourself and are able to say no then you are going to find this industry difficult. But you have to keep your self-respect because when you lose your self-respect that’s when the demons of this industry (drugs and alcohol) can creep into your life. And they have taken down a many good people.
Any women of color coming into this industry needs to understand the type of individuals that run and control the adult industry. You must counter these individuals through self- promotion and self-marketing anytime you get the chance. That means when you have a chance for a photo opps, being interviewed, and just standing out from the crowd you need to do so. A woman of color in the adult industry needs to think of herself as a twin-engine plane. All twin-engine planes can fly on one engine. Now you are going to have some yaw and pitch problems but they can be controlled and you should fly. But if you had both engines running at the same time the flight is going to be so much easier. So if you are going to navigate in this industry then you need to have both engines running. And maybe you will find success.

Introducing Ms. Panther
This week I had the opportunity to converse with adult star Ms. Panther. Over a 2-hour period I found this young lady to be aware, knowledgeable, and very intelligent. This current college student working on a major in economics is navigating her way through the adult industry. It’s a damn shame that she walking through the same mine fields that Jeannie Pepper and Ebony Ayes had to over 20 years ago. Jeannie and Ebony dispelled the notion that women of color weren’t viable in the market place if giving the same marketing and promotions efforts of their white counter parts Again I ask, “is the adult industry ready to move into the 21st century”? Ms. Panther is going to have to prove that she’s “undeniable”. After talking with her I can assure you that if she stays as balanced and as focus as she is today she will become “undeniable”. Check out the interview.

Ms. Panther Interview
How did you find your way into the business?
Needed money for rent and expenses after moving off my college campus. I saw an ad that was looking for models willing to make up to $5,000.00 a week. It was for porn and it wasn’t a good experience but it went from there.
You are in college. Have you been recognized yet on campus?
No, not yet
What are your goals in the adult industry?
I want to really work on my web site and make it viable. I want to make a statement with it. And it would be very nice to do some high-end projects too.
Do you think you have a fair chance to achieve them?
I don’t know about fair but I am going to have to work very hard to achieve anything positive in this industry.
Did you watch porn before you got in the business?
Only a few times with a boyfriend.
Were there anyone in the porn industry you knew about before you got into the business?
I knew about Heather Hunter because my boyfriend was a big fan. But there wasn’t anyone else.
Anyone you admire or want to model your career after in the industry?
Since I really didn’t look at porn I didn’t know anyone.
You have been in the industry for a short time. What would you say is the positive qualities of the business?
It’s money and travel for me plus everyone is so sexually open.
What would you say is the negative side of the business?
Just the basic bullshit of the industry, attitudes, biases and things of that nature.
Is there any type of support in the industry for the talent?
Not really.
Do the girls support each other in the industry?
I think everyone can find at least one person they can befriend. But it can be hard when everyone is pitted against each other all the time.
Do you have the support of family and friends since you have been in the business?
I am still in the closet as far as my parents are concerned because I thought it would be a one-time thing but since I have decided to stay in the business I am going to inform them. Plus once my website is where I want it to be then a lot of friends and family may find out. So I think its would be better coming from me.
Do you see opportunities for you in the industry?
Any opportunities that I have in this industry I am going to have to make them myself and I a prepared to do so.
Your agent is LA Direct. They are positioning their company to be the number one supplier of talent in the industry. Do you think you are being promoted equally compared to your white counter parts at the agency?
Let’s see. On LA Direct web site it states that they are seeking female model to work in the industry. Earn 15k to 20k a month. I can assure you that I don’t make anything close to that. But the assignments that I get from LA Direct are with professional companies. It would be nice for LA Direct to sponsor a women of color night at the Rouge Gentlemen’s Club.
How much of the shootings you get come from them vs. producers calling you direct?
Most of my shootings come via LA Direct.
Do you see yourself shooting some high-end project?
It would be nice to think so but companies like Vivid are always looking for women much smaller than me.
Are you learning anything about the business end of the industry?
First off I had to understand that this is a business. Now that I understand that I am just looking and learning. There is so much to do in the industry instead of just being talent in front of the camera.
I know it’s very early in your career in front of the camera but are you thinking about doing anything behind the camera later? Are you taking mental notes on how a project is put together and shot?
Right now I am just taking it all in.
Do you attend any of the adult industry conventions?
I went to my first AVN convention this past January. It was a very interesting time. I saw and met a lot of people in the industry and I understand now it’s a good place to network.
How have the fans reacted to you? Do they know who you are?
The fans reaction to me was very surprising. So many came up to me that knew my name and wanted to take pictures with me. I really didn’t think many would know me. The fact that they didn’t was shocking. But it was really cool.
You have a website, yahoo group, and MySpace site. Do you enjoy interacting with the fans via Internet?
That is something I really would like to do more of. I am planning to do just that once my website has been promoted more.
Are you plotting a course as you move through the industry or are you just going alone with the flow?
I do have a course in mind but I also want to be able to go with the flow sometimes. I need to be fluid.
Are you aware about the market in Europe?
Honestly I am not.
Would you be interested in doing projects in Europe and have you been approached?
I haven’t been approached but I would be very interested in learning more about the European market.
Do you think you must do anything special to appeal to the white market?
Not really.
Do you think you must do anything special to appeal to the black market?
I don’t think so just be myself.
Is it important to you to have crossover appeal in the adult market?
Of course, you would like to appeal to a broad market. That makes things better for you financially.
Are there any sex acts that you refuse to do on camera?
I haven’t done anal because I think I want to do that on my website first.
When LA Direct come to you with an assignment to you have the right to say no thank you? And if you do say no does that affect your chances in the future for more work?
They haven’t brought me anything yet that I refused to do. But of course I can say no to anything. If it got to the point where LA Direct was bring assignments I didn’t want then changes would have to be made.
Are you satisfied with you work assignment and the quality of work that you are getting from LA Direct?
The assignments are fine I just wish there were more.
What’s the most important factor for you when you are deciding if you are going to accept an assignment?
I am not going to do anything that depicts violence against women. Besides that I am ok with most things but next to that money is important to my decision.
Do you do any research about a production company prior to working for them?
I have started doing that more on my own. I am just checking out different companies in the industry to see what there track record is.
Do you ever watch yourself on films?
Yes I have started to now.
Are there any adult stars that you enjoy watching?
Right now I just have a few of my own DVD’s but I am not into looking at porn a lot.
Are you looking to crossover into mainstream work?
It would be very nice to do videos or other work in mainstream but if that’s is going to happen then I am going to have to make it happen.
How long do you think you are going to be stay in the adult industry?
I am still trying to decide that as we speak.
What is it that you would like for producers to know about you?
First and foremost that I am a professional and I come prepared to leave 110% on film for any scene that I am in. And also that I enjoy what I do and it’s going to show on film.
What would you like for the fans of the adult industry know about you?
That I enjoy them and enjoy being part of their sexual fantasies and I hope I always will be able to earn that right in every scene that I am in. I want them to also know that I need their support and look forward to hearing from them always.
When you are finished with the adult industry what is it you would like for fans to say about you?
She was one of the best.
What do you think can be done by the fans to help you become more successful?
I want them all to join my web site. Showing a solid fan base is always helpful when dealing with producers’ when it’s time negotiating fees or box covers. When you see me in a film give me a good review. That speaks volumes when you take the time to write a review. My foundation is built on fan support and with that I can be solid.
